Jaundice is usually the first sign, and sometimes the only sign, of liver disease. Jaundice often results from high levels of bilirubin (bile pigment) in the bloodstream, which is then passed through the kidneys. These high levels can cause an obstruction of the bile duct, often due to a tumor or gallstone. Hepatitis can also cause jaundice.
